Now in its third year, the Tekdata-Cryoconnect prize for the best degree in Astrophysics has been won by Keele University student, Claire Rachel Cashmore.

The prize, which was established in 2011, is awarded to the Astrophysics student achieving the best performance in their level 3 Astrophysics/Physics modules. This was assessed and ratified by the Astrophysics level 3 examination board and a recommendation made by the Head of School, who then recommended to Senate.

Speaking about Claire’s achievement, Tekdata-Cryoconnect’s Managing Director, Ernie Edwards commented “Coming from Penkridge, Staffordshire, Claire is a local girl who has studied at a local university and has been awarded this prize by a local company. The demanding nature of this international scientific discipline makes Claire’s achievement quite unique!”

Claire will be building on her success having been awarded a studentship at Leicester University to undertake a PHD in Theoretical Astrophysics.

The award sponsor, Tekdata – Cryoconnect, is a technology company, based in Stoke-on-Trent, which manufactures parts (specialist cables, wiring and wiring harnesses) that are used in spacecraft launched by NASA and ESA. They have particular expertise in Astrophysics satellites, operating at cryogenic temperatures, such as Herschel and the forthcoming James Webb Space Telescope.
